Final Exam Questions

This is the last week to blog (due before midnight on Wednesday), and it's time to decide our final exam questions. We've been working on the idea of having one question on the movie, Timbuktu, and the other on African agency in the colonial period, but we should also consider questions that were on the previous years' final exams:
  1. Compare and contrast the role of Christianity in Things Fall Apart and The River Between or compare and contrast the role of education in The River Between and Khaffir Boy.
  2. Since independence, what have been the greatest challenges for African countries?
  3. List and describe the most significant or surprising thing you have learned about Africa's history in each of the following categories: (a) precolonial, (b) colonial, and (c) post-independence.
  4. How did European colonialism change Africa and African societies? (see especially 11/3 blog post)
Would you choose two of these for our exam or something else? Please comment below.

  1. I feel like the answers for 2 and 4 can overlap because some of the challenges African countries face since independence stem from being colonized, but I do like them both. Also, I like number 3.

  2. I definitely think we should have a question that would relate to the Timbuktu movie. I also like questions #2 and #3 I think us telling you what we've learned and found interesting this semester is a great way to get our understanding of the class.

  3. I highly enjoy the first question because it forces us to read the books (if you haven't yet) and I feel as though history sticks more when we read it in the context of a story. The fourth question is also a solid question because European colonialism changed African countries in different ways.

  4. I believe questions #2 and #3 would cover the majority of the information we covered throughout the semester and will show an accurate reflection of knowledge we learned over the course

  5. If #4 is a question on the exam, how would you recommend we answer it without thinking from the Euro-centric perspective? I feel that could pose a problem, but other than that tidbit, I like #2 and #3, as we can really use the different books, texts and literature, to craft great responses. Also, these two avoid thinking about Africa from the European perspective, and could be mended to emphasize that we should answer with the notion of African agency.

  6. I like question one because it highlights the topics that we covered in our textbook. It relates our historical understanding to the true reality of real African history and culture. Also, I believe that it would demonstrate who truly did the reading assignments and further ensure that everyone has some knowledge about true African culture outside of the textbook.
I also believe that question 3 would be good to writer about because it is opinion based. The opinion portion the text gives us a chance to reflect our own all that we have learned this semester including our blog posts and the novels we have read.

  7. I think #2 and #4 would be good questions for the final because they both highly focus on everything we have been studying over the semester
